What if I allow a sense of fun into everyday life?
I have an ordinary day job like most people. In fact, I work as a medical doctor at a local hospital, and have been for almost 20 years.
One day during a particularly long work meeting, I started doodling in my notebook. Then I thought, if I can doodle, why not draw? So I joined a local community sketching group, the Brisbane City Sketchers and honed some of my drawing skills that way.
Some time later, i thought to myself, if I can draw, why not paint? So I bought some acrylic paints, and have not looked back from there since.
My favourite method is mixed media, with use of acrylic paints, gel and POSCA pens, oil pastels and fabric and paper collage. I’m a totally self-taught artist, with the exception of pointers from Youtube, artists’ blogs and a couple of weekend painting workshops with Brisbane Painting Classes.
I get my best inspiration when I allow my mind to freely wander, especially while showering and just before I fall asleep in bed at night. I like to think about everyday things in a whimsical way, letting free associations occur in my head, sort of as though I am in a screen saver mode. “What if” is my favourite catchphrase.
I am very humbled and also proud that much of my work has been purchased by medical colleagues for both their consulting rooms and homes, and some of my artwork also decorates my workplace.
Lately I have also started doing a lot of sewing. I’ve always been an embroiderer, but thanks to the encouragement of a good friend, I am doing a dive into the world of textiles. Join me on my creative journey.
