Peacock On The Roof

This is one of those paintings inspired by a funny event in my life. Or maybe even several funny events.

First. Not long after my husband and I moved into our new home, one evening, we came out of the house to discover a peacock on our roof. We laughed pretty hard as it was making an unearthly racket, and could only conclude that the bird was a displaced citizen from one of the old acreages nearby, where the developers had taken over. Such a lovely looking bird making such a horrible noise!

The 2 plovers in the background almost always set up shop in the grass in front of our house, and raise 1-2 chicks a year. They are always there every spring, and I hope my husband and I will be as constant as that, not in reproduction, I mean, just in terms of loyalty to each other!

The incident of the 2 rabbits was almost surreal. Now, this is Queensland, where it is illegal to keep pet rabbits, and I had never actually seen one ever since I came to Brisbane almost 20 years ago. Within a space of a week, I suddenly came to see a different rabbit on 2 different occasions close to my home. A week later on ANZAC day, I discovered I was pregnant! And my twins were safely born in the Year of the Rabbit. How much of a coincidence is that?!

Definitely worth commemorating in a painting, right?

Those purple flowers are also something that I connect with my street, as the house leading to my street has a massive bush of these flowers. I think they are informally called “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” simply because the bush has all 3 colours of blooms at the same time. It gives out a most delicious scent. The bush itself is something that always catches my eye when I turn into my street. It’s a sign that I’m home.
