Having not painted much still life before, I decided to immortalise some of my favourite flowers on canvas – bright red gerberas with black centres. These were my wedding flowers. I like them because they look bright and cheerful, they are pleasingly round, and they last ages. The bright chilli colour also brings life to any room.
I made this image up, as my husband only managed to find pink gerberas this year, but he never forgets on my birthday, and almost always manages to find some form of gerbera for me.
Also this time, I particularly wanted to dedicate this painting to those people affected by the Dreamworld disaster, and (as I found out on my medical mums’ Facebook group) by terrorist attacks in Pakistan killing lots of innocent people. I feel so powerless, and can only try and cheer up those few people within my small circle.
I do my best to look on the bright side of everything and to stay positive, otherwise it is much too easy to wallow in all the doom and gloom and all that negativity. There is still so much beauty and goodness in this world. We must allow ourselves to see it.
